Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858) is considered the last great Japanese Ukiyo-e artist. He produced this famous woodblock as a part of the
One Hundred Famous Views of Edo
(an area that is today Tokyo). The series was probably commissioned to promote all the new buildings and achievements after the 1855 earthquake which required the new construction. This print was produced in 1858, soon after the bridge's construction and right before Hiroshige's death.
Hiroshige's woodblock prints were produced and sold in the tens of thousands, and many of them found their way to Europe after Japan opened in 1853. Many artists there, such as Van Gogh, Whistler, Manet, Monet and Lautrec–to name a few–were influenced by Japanese woodblock prints, particularly Hiroshige's.
Eleven colors were used (two of them blends) to create this serigraph edition of 125 prints. Each print is numbered and titled in pencil.
The image is 15" x 24" inches. The white archival paper is 22" x 30."
